Making A difference With Cotton T-Shirts

Did you know that it takes as much as 2700 liters of water to produce a single cotton shirt? That’s unseen water that we use, called ‘virtual water’, which forms part of our liquid footprint.

In other products such as colas and drinks, the water used in its production is actually greater than what we find inside the bottle. Even your phones have been made using a lot of water, from mining essential minerals up to washing those microchips.

Worldwide, seventy percent of water is used in agriculture for growing crops such as cotton. To help address the issue of water shortage, The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has established the Better Cotton Initiative to grow cotton with less water. For example, some 75,000 Pakistani farmers have reduced their water dependence by 39% but increased their incomes by 11%. As a result, big global brands have become interested in implementing the Better Cotton Initiative.

Taking care of cotton shirts, however, takes the most amount of water, and as much as 40 gallons are needed for just one load of washing. Drying uses 5 times more energy than washing. That is why the WWF is teaming up with National Geographic to help people learn about saving and conserving water.

T-shirt Truck: Coming in Cleveland

If it’s about selling goods in trucks, then you’re sure to have it in Cleveland. It was food trucks a couple of years back, and this time around, it’s a truck for selling shirts.

Tony Madalone’s Cleveland based Fresh Brewed Tees decided to include retail trucks in its clothing retail operations when the clothing store couldn’t decide where among Cleveland’s hotspots such as East 4th/Gateway, Warehouse District, Ohio City, Tremont, etc., to open another retail store in. The company purchased a box truck that looks similar to food truck and has called on Clevelanders to help it get on the streets.

Madalone also enlisted the help of Kickstarter, a website that lets people fund a project in return for something from the owner when a project turns successful. Currently, he is hoping to get v$5000 in the next 24 days and has so far raised $1600.

Madalone also worked with Cleveland City Councilman Joe Cimperman, who worked with the City Council regarding food trucks before, to get a legislation allowing such a truck in major city events. He said the biggest challenge is obtaining permits to sell from a truck in the streets of the central business district. The current arrangement is selling from a private lot with its owner’s permission as well as a $300 permit per location. A petition for signing by Clevelanders is now on the rolls to convince city leaders to allow clothing trucks to sell on the streets just like food trucks.

Soft City Clothing: Be Stunned

upsimple1 grande 300x275 Stunning Typographical T shirts from Soft City Clothing

Just as a masterpiece can’t really be captured by even the most stunning photograph, so are the new typographical t-shirts from Soft City Clothing. The London based t-shirt brand was created by Archie Proudfoot, a guy who clearly makes a statement of elegance with his designs. His work on these shirts speaks both of simplicity and elegance combined those results into one tagline: superb quality.

The impeccable 3D prints on Soft City Clothing’s t-shirts are a result of exacting process that ensures each piece is made with the highest degree of quality possible. Each masterpiece first undergoes screen printing process, after which laser cut letters are put in place into the shirt by ironing. The typographical are then hand stitched on top of the printed blanks creating that subtle 3D shadow effect. Because of the unique process by which these shirts are made, the letters won’t pull or pucker, as usually happens with appliquéd counterparts.

The shirts sells for £25.00 to £26.00, a price that is worth the perfect assemblage of color, typography and fabric weight that lends a Soft City piece that brand of quality that speaks for itself.

Psalm 91 on Ray Lewis’ Postgame T-Shirt

Ray Lewis

It is quite normal for people to print just about anything in their shirts, from different designs to opinions. But when what your T-shirt says on it stirs a whole lot of people off their seats without criticism of what it conveys, then it’s definitely a worthy statement.

This is exactly what Ray Lewis did. The soon-to-be-retired linebacker of the NFL just recently took off his jersey after a game to reveal a black sleeveless T-shirt on which is printed on a gold font the Psalm for Protection, Psalm 91, also known as a psalm for hard times.

The shirt received much attention as Lewis made a victory lap around the M&T stadium, sending many to consider what message Lewis’ is trying to put across. Lewis, who is said to have taken refuge in the Lord, says he hopes that his action has been uplifting for people, especially those who need to push through no matter what circumstance they may be under. He also said that he felt no pain in recording a game high 13 even after suffering from a season-ending triceps tear.

Soft City Clothing

Soft City Clothing shirts are the product of a multistage process that delivers a consistent level of quality. Its first collection, the “BE”, “UP”, and “ON” shirts are intended to make its first customers share in the ownership of a unique apparel product.

Soft City Clothing takes its inspiration from the traditional desire for strong prints in men’s wear as well as the classic typography of traditional sign writers. Before a professional machinist stitches the fabric letters, each shirt is first screen-printed with shadow letters corresponding to the fabric letters.

The two letter combination that was used in the design of each shirt was first sketched in Illustrator after which it was sent to local screen printers. Laser cutters were then used in cutting out the fabric letter to ensure consistency in cuts, thus matching up the dimensions of the screen print. The fabric letters then were ironed the shirts, after which it was sent to a professional machinist to make the final stitches on each letter, using the dominant color in each letter’s color combination. This way, the stitches can only be seen really up close.

With its unusual manufacturing process, Soft City Clothing ventures into fund raising to finance its projects, and to meet the minimum order requirements of its partner manufacturers in London. A pledge will be rewarded with the first line that comes off its production while the top pledge will receive one of the pieces of original artwork where the designs began.

And not to forget, you’ll surely love that cute little love tab attached to the shirt’s left sleeve and on the inside of the back of the collar.

Racist T-Shirts

By all indications, Taco Cid in West Colombia is a Mexican restaurant rather than a political hotspot. But just recently, it has attracted national attention on the issue of illegal immigrants, reaping both criticism and praise from different people whose opinion on the issue are as diverse as the American population.

The controversy started out when the restaurant owner, Snelgrove, decided to make and sell T-shirts printed with the phrase “How To Catch An Illegal Immigrant”, accompanied by a drawing of a box with a stick held over two tacos, resembling a makeshift trap.

Sandy Jones, a pastor at a predominantly Hispanic church in the Midlands, complains that the shirts are being very racist in its comment, and is asking the restaurant to stop selling the shirts and to publicly apologize.

Snelgrove, however, averred that they created the T-shirts as witty and comical statement regarding illegal immigrants, and that no element of hate or racial remarks is intended towards any ethnic group.

Snelgrove states that she got the inspiration for the shirts at a cruise in Key West, where she saw similar shirts being sold. Selling for $35, she says that she has been mailing the shirts all over the world.

She further added that it’s not racist but just a shirt about immigrants, illegal immigrants that is.
