Forever 21, a famous apparel retailer, is selling a t-shirt that Kurt Colbain drew around 1992. The first time it was shown to be worn was by Kurt Colbain during Saturday Night Live in the same year. The shirt says “Flipper” with a drawing that looks like a shark with it’s teeth exposed. It has nothing to do with the famous flipper TV show from decades ago, but actually a punk band from San Francisco who were an early influence for Nirvana’s musical style.
So what’s the big deal with selling this t-shirt? Well, many music fans were complaining that it was just a cheap rip-off from Kurt’s shirt, and Forever 21 even went to the point that they took the shirt off their stores and website from being sold. Now, they are selling it again for $16.90 and they’ve done their homework.
A spokeswoman for Forever 21 stated that they do have legal rights to sell the shirt, and also have permissions from Worn Free to sell it as well (they are an online retailer that also sells the shirt online).
So what do you think? Should they be allowed to sell this, or is it just another way to get some money off of an old idea from a famous celebrity?
