Are You Passionate About Your T-Shirts?

Some would look at a t-shirt as a causal article of clothing that you wear with a pair of jeans or shorts. Others would classify their t-shirts as a symbol of some sorts. Whether you wear t-shirts as “good luck charm” or to create a statement what you wear can definitely signify what you’re passionate about. T-shirts can tell stories and create memories for years to come, and there are thousands of people that feel the same way. Have you ever thought about why you wear t-shirts or maybe what your t-shirts mean to you?

Adults have t-shirts that they wear to their favorite sporting event, t-shirts from souvenirs of a trip, and even because of the style, color, or theme. Wearing the shirts almost instantly put us back in that moment we first wore it. Love at First Smell

Tired of online dating? Why don’t you pick out potential mates with just a sniff at this new so-called pheromone parties? At pheromone parties, participants are asked to bring with them a slept-in t-shirt that will be smelled by other guests.

The rules are simple. All participants huddle around several tables covered with numbers plastic freezer bags stuffed with shirts. Once you found the scent you like, a picture of you holding the bag will be taken and projected onto a wall. Then, the owner could step forward and meet you. In contrast to the large number of online dating sites, which demand countless details from singles, pheromone parties are more modern and only require your smell to get a partner.

Judith Prays, a woman from California got weary of online dating, started out pheromone parties as an experimental matchmaking fest. Now these parties had been held in New York and Los Angeles and are planned for other cities.

The idea of finding a match  by sniffing their smelly t-shirt is to be chuckled by many partygoers, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t some science supporting the idea. With the use of similar t-shirt experiment, research studies have proved that different human scents are preferred by people. Researchers say that a set of our genes influences our immune response that decides whose smell we choose is a nature’s way to prevent inbreeding and preserve genetic adaptations.

Cell phone-charging T-shirts

Have you ever thought of charging your cell phone with your t-shirt? Xiaodong Li, a professor of mechanical engineering at University of South Carolina, envisions the future with electronics as a part of our wardrobe and is making his vision into reality with the help of Lihong Bao, a post doctoral researcher.

They explained how an ordinary material in a cotton t-shirt can be turned into a source of electrical power by a simple chemical activation  route that includes traditional dipping, drying and curing process, where activated carbon fibers are produced from the fibers from a t-shirt, yet retaining its flexibility.

Researchers showed that these activate carbon textile acts as a capacitor with the use of small pieces of the fiber as an electrode, proving the once-cotton t-shirt is a repository for electricity. This activated carbon textile has high energy storage densities that acts like double-layer capacitors are also called supercapacitors. “Nanoflowers” of manganese oxide is coated in the individual fibers enhances the electrode performance of the fabric, making the super capacitor constantly high-performing. When these super capacitors are stacked up, it is able to charge portable devices such as cell phones.

Li proudly confirmed that their product goes through an environmentally friendly process which is very inexpensive, unlike previous methods with the use of oil which are complicated and produced harmful side products. Li and Bao will be working with industry partners soon to take this concept to market.

Smart T-Shirts monitor ill patients

Every time we go see a doctor, it costs us strain from the long wait in the waiting room, plus the costly bill. Those who need frequent check-ups to monitor their progress have no choice but to suffer from these strains, but that won’t be a problem anymore. There is a new way for patients to get a check up without actually visiting the doctor. It is the smart t-shirt developed by a group of 14 partners from Europe, through the Chronius project coordinated by Mr. Rosso, particularly for patients suffering Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and Chronic kidney disease (CKD). This light-weight smart t-shirt has heart, respiratory and activity monitoring sensors that can be changed specifically to patients’ requirements.

Along with the t-shirt, the system works with external devices, such as digital weight scales, glucometers, blood pressure monitors, spirometers and evenair quality sensors. The care provider receives information relayed from the sensors through a smartphone or PDA, with the help of intelligent software, making it more convenient, especially for patients who are in need of long-term care. It also has an alert system that can connect patients living by themselves to their care provider in case of emergency.

This project had also caught interest from sports organizations such as Italy’s rugby team. With the innovative system of Chronius T-shirt, it can help sports team in monitoring the player’s performance during training.
