I Wear Your Shirt

Selling ad space on your chest is a brilliant idea “to make some extra money without actually working”. This idea came to Jason Sadler, from Florida, in 2008 and established an advertising company that uses t-shirts to advertise businesses, I Wear Your Shirt. I Wear Your Shirt allows a company to buy a day in which Sadler wears a shirt with the company’s logo and advertise in an interactive way by taking pictures and videos about the company, and upload them to Ustream and Youtube, making him wear different shirts every day of the year.

Sadler decided to capitalize on t-shirts because people love to wear them, they’re easy to sell, and inexpensive. A unique pricing model is complied by this advertising company. Advertising on the first day of the year costs $1. The price increases everyday which makes advertising on the last day of the year costs $365.There is also a revised model, where a week is paid by the advertisers to give more individualized attention.

On their first six months, the whole year was sold out, bringing in $70,000 for the first year. This had caught the attention of the New York Times, Fast Company and other media outlets. Now, I Wear Your Shirt is composed of a team of five and earns $500,000 per year. Their clients include Arizona Tea, Starbucks, Pizza Hut, Nissan, and Lucky Brand. The company is continuously growing and will be shifting to a new direction soon.

Registering with QR-code T-Shirts

Voters for 2012 presidential election can now register with the new QR-code T-shirt. This was devised by a non-profit organization, Rock the Vote, which aims to engage and build political power for young people. Participants wearing QR-code t-shirt will be scanned and then taken to the Rock the Vote website, by volunteers, to register. After registering, they can simply use their mobile device to vote. With the help of RedLaser, a QR-code scanning app, Rock the Vote, together with ProJam was able to develop the code.

This campaign is designed to invite younger audience. Based on the Census Bureau report in 2008 and 2010, 18-to-24-year-old demographics had the lowest voter turnout in the election-by-lot. The New Republic publications sites that young adults are more likely to vote until older because they have the tendency to delay their goals further. Even with these economic crisis, Rock the Vote hopes to gain 1.5 million new voters before November 6 this year.

PromoJam’s Amanda MacNaughton, who worked with Rock the Vote on this project said, “QR codes can do fun things like gamification. They also cut down on loss of conversion and increase convenience. QR codes haven’t moved mainstream with all demographics, but Generation Y knows what they are and they use them.”

The QR-code equipped Rock the Vote t-shirts are sold online and in Whole Foods stores nationwide. For those interested to volunteer can support the project by wearing the t-shirt and persuading people to sign up.

Spidey Eyes T-shirt

Spider-Man is surely being loved by everyone. Why not get a shirt inspired by our friendly neighborhood? PrettyMuchIt, a youtube channel about the hottest upcoming movies, music, tech, and more has now started its own t-shirt company, Obscurity. The company offers t-shirts with great designs inspired by sci-fi movies, games, TV and many more. One of their latest designs is the Spidey Eyes red t-shirt. It is a minimalist t-shirt design and is perfect for fans of both the Sam Raimi-directed Spider-Man trilogy and Marc Webb’s upcoming reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man. The owner of this company, Eric Striffler, is the designer of these t-shirts.

There are two different colors for this design, silver and gold. Reviews about the movie explained why sometimes Spider-Man’s eyes are yellow and sometimes they’re not. It is said that the lenses Peter uses react to the day and night differently. That’s why they are different depending on the time of day so it’s cool this clothing company is offering both versions of the eyes.

The “Spidey Eyes” shirts will only be available until July so for those who would like to own one, make sure you purchase it by the end of the month! Other designs include Prometheus and previously reported, “Shawarma” shirts that are inspired by the movie “The Avengers”.

Fake Exploitation Movie T-shirts

Ultra Trash Clothing, a clothing label in Germany, brings back the influence of the American Grindhouse Films in the 60’s and 70’s as they share to the world their extraordinary t-shirt designs. This small clothing label was founded by two graphic designers Florian Baier and Stefan Huebsch in 2011. Inspired by the so-called “Grindhouse” which is an American term of theater that shows exploitation movies containing large amount of sex, violence and bizarre subject matter, Baier and Huebsch designed their shirts with “fake movie posters”.

Biker movies, slasher movies, road movies and erotic films from the 60’s an 70’s, are included in their extraordinary apparel line. Their main feature is the both-sided print of Ultra Trash Shirts, which was a great success. It is a combination of two shirts in one. The print inside is the fake movie poster itself and the print outside is Ultra Trash American Grindhouse flag logo.  In addition, a corresponding movie poster is included in the package.

The two designers came up with all the movie titles and prints, giving the posters a realistic appearance and as if the movies really exist. Their t-shirts are very classic and exceptional. The vintage-looking designs of the t-shirts also resemble to the Old Russian Constructivist movie posters, which are intended for the audience who are often illiterate, so they rely on catchy images, typography, and design more than just the meaning of words.

Weapons-grade knitting

If you’re a student of history, you’re well aware that governments are always looking for a new advantage when it comes to dealing with their enemies. Sometimes it’s a political advantage, and sometimes psychological, but more often, what they’re seeking is a technological edge over their rivals. More to the point, the US has long been involved in an economic war against China. China has been a formidable opponent in this arena with its seemingly endless supply of cheap labor. As such, American manufacturers have been having trouble competing against their third world counterparts.

The US is looking to change this. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, has just awarded a $1.25 million contract to SoftWear Automation Inc. The goal is to develop a completely automatic cutting and sewing machine that will allow US manufacturers to create garments at costs LOWER than those in the Chinese and other third world markets.

The ultimate goal, of course, is to bring manufacturing back stateside. There’s no word on how far along SoftWear Automation is in developing the technology, but the goal is laudable. While this sort of development could ultimately bring a lot of business back to US shores, what it doesn’t address is job creation. Although these machines would bring manufacturing back to the US, a fully automated machine wouldn’t require a lot of workers to run it. But, knowing DARPA, they’re probably working on that, too.
