T-shirt makes fun of Occupy Wall Street

Vineyard Vines from Martha’s Vineyard (a location teeming with rich citizens) has made a tee that takes a jab at the Occupy Wall Street movement.  It’s creative, but it will definitely get many people upset because of it’s obvious pun on what thousands gathered together for.  The t-shirt has a small, pink whale with the word “occupy” on the breast pocket and the image on the tee is a person sleeping in a tent with signs around that say:  “more ice for the cooler!”, “more time on the water!” and “more cheeseburgers”.  The person seems to be resting on a tropical island with its own guitar, sinking sun, sand and sandals.  Nice spot for the rich to be hanging out, but hey, they can afford it!

There are already many who are getting upset about this t-shirt since it shows a lack of concern of what OWS stands for.  The tee is basically saying that the rich are going to enjoy their money and life, while the OWS folks can sit around and protest all day.  What OWS stands for is the corruption that is occurring in the United States and protesting how the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.

You can of course purchase one of these tees for yourself, but I wouldn’t suggest wearing it in public in New York City.  Unless, of course, you don’t wish to live any longer.  What do you think about this?  Tell us your opinions on this touchy subject.

Jay-Z Controversy

Unless you live under a rock, you know what’s happening all over the United States (and even some parts of the world) with the Occupy Wall Street campaigns in most cities.  Famous rapper (and millionaire) Jay-Z decided to sell shirts that said “Occupy All Streets” for $22 each.  Of course, the whole point of Occupy Wall Street was to stand up to big money makers, so trying to sell a shirt that makes money off the protest is ironic.  It’s not hard to figure out he’s trying to make money off of what’s happening in Occupy Wall Street, but hey, I guess the recession is even affecting millionaire rappers too.  Once they went on sale though, the movement’s members told him to take it down and it was done so immediately.  The members stated that the movement wasn’t to be used as a tool for financial gain.

Artist Daniel Edwards decided to take a different approach and instead of selling art, he fashioned a totem pole sculpture with Jay-Z at the base, covered in necklaces with a dollar sign on them.  The faces of fiction characters Mr. Burns, Richie Rich and Scrooge McDuck adorn the rest of the pole.  Daniel Edwards has got into trouble before; creating artwork that depicts different famous personalities in odd situations.

Who knows what’s going to happen next!

Everyday Special from 6DollarShirts

6DollarShirts is taking a different approach to the t-shirt industry: buy bulk and save tons.  Sure, you can buy an individual t-shirt from their marketplace and pay (you guessed it) 6 dollars.  Or, you can take advantage of 6DollarShirts everyday special: 10 t-shirts for $50.  Think about all the possibilities with 10 awesome t-shirts at your disposal:

  • Christmas shopping is done in a matter of minutes
  • An entirely new wardrobe can be yours
  • T-shirt jump rope is now a reality

There’s honestly not that much out there when you start talking about high quality screen printed designer t-shirts.  That’s the beauty of 6DollarShirts: extremely low prices with high quality designs and printing.

By selling t-shirts at $6 a pop, 6DollarShirts admits it won’t make much profit.  But by offering their 10 t-shirt deal, it encourages its designers to create amazing designs constantly rather than bank on one hugely popular t-shirt design.  Sometimes quantity and quality aren’t mutually exclusive.

The designs are timely and pop-cultured based, getting inspiration from places like Seinfeld, Chris Farley, and Star Wars.

Occupy All Streets Not Done Yet

It seems that Jay-Z and Rocawear aren’t done occupying all streets.  On Friday last week, Rocawear announced that it was pulling Jay-Z’s “Occupy All Streets” t-shirt from its shelves over speculation that the profits from the $22 t-shirt would not be donated to the Occupy Wall Street Movement.  This was fueled by Rocawear’s statement that:

“‘Occupy All Streets’ is our way of reminding people that there is change to be made everywhere, not just on Wall Street. At this time we have not made an official commitment to monetarily support the movement.”

Rocawear’s lack of a commitment suggested that Jay-Z would be profiting from a movement dedicated to leveling the playing field for the 99%.  Pretty ironic considering that Jay-Z is definitely not part of the 99%.  Although Jay-Z didn’t specifically mention where the money would go, the Occupy Wall Street Movement was left to wonder why he wouldn’t say:

“To attempt to profit off of the first important social moment of 50 years with an overpriced piece of cotton is an insult to the fight for economic civil rights known as #occupywallstreet,” an Occupy Wall Street leader who goes by the pseudonym “Grim” told TMZ.

However, Occupy All Streets is moving forward.  You’ll have to wait until December 16 (the shirts are on back order), but at least you can occupy like Jay-Z in time for Christmas.
